  1. What is acerola?

Acerola is a perennial and green shrub, which also often occurs under the name of Barbados cherry. This plant is mainly found in Central America, more precisely in the areas of the Canary Islands, and from there goes to the European diet. Acerola was initially used to treat a wide range of childhood and adult males. Nevertheless, over time, the fruits of this plant have been used primarily as a natural food supplement and a great alternative to synthetic nutrients.

Since acerola is such a popular and effective fruit, the question arises what really determines the extraordinary properties of this plant? The most important and the biggest advantage of cherries from Barbados is a powerful dose of ascorbic acid, a compound known as vitamin C. The content of the aforementioned vitamin amounts even to 2.5 g of a classic portion of 100 g of pomegranate malpigua. Therefore, it is easy to calculate that the consumption of four acerola fruits allows to cover the daily demand for vitamin C. What’s more, the amount of ascorbic acid found in cherry from Barbados is considered the largest one-time dose of this substance. Acerola can successfully be a good exchanger for a black variety of currants, parsley or oranges, which are considered the main sources of this nutrient.

As for vitamin C itself, this is one of the basic compounds for human physiology. In addition to its strong antioxidant properties, it participates in a number of important processes. Ascorbic acid is used in the production of collagen that strengthens our joints and skin, regulates blood pressure and heart rate, and also effectively increases immunity against the harmful effects of pathogenic microorganisms. This compound is especially recommended after a long period of illness, when the body needs time to gradually regain after a disturbed normal state. Nevertheless, it should be borne in mind that excessive supplementation with vitamin C may have adverse effects. The effect of hypervitaminosis is, for example, renal dysfunction, as well as impaired urinary system function.

In practice, acerola is used in a variety of forms. In addition to the typical dried and lozenges or swallows containing acerola powder, the most popular are juices and extracts of pomegranate malpigua, which can be used for both internal and external use. Acerola is often an ingredient in cosmetic preparations such as creams or regenerating masks.

However, this is not the end of the beneficial properties of acerola. Cherry from Barbados is characterized by the presence of a large number of other and equally healthy ingredients. Acerola is a habitat of extremely strong antioxidants. I am talking primarily about carotenoids, which in the case of granatolist malpigia occur in as many as 17 different varieties. In addition to effective anthocyanins, cleansing flavones and detoxifying glycosides, the largest percentage is beta-carotene, or provitamin A. This compound is especially recommended as a means of reducing problems with the eyes (mainly referred to macular degeneration), but also serves as a protective function for cardiovascular system, and is a great way to naturally increase immunity and endurance of the immune system.

As everyone knows, our little kids need the greatest care and the best solutions for their health. Therefore, acerola, like other sources of vitamin C, is a great solution for children. The child’s digestive system may react badly to synthetic supplements or powdered forms of ascorbic acid. For this purpose, a good solution turns out to be the use of acerola juice or fruit, which can be successfully used as an addition to desserts or simply a replacement for unhealthy sweets.
