Proper functioning of glucose balance in the organism is mainly dependent on effective activity of insulin, which is influenced by such aspects as obesity, diet or lifestyle that we lead. A new weapon has appeared in supplementation in the fight with insulin-resistance, the development of which leads to developing diabetes type II. Berberine, as this is the substance in question, belongs to compounds, which are called protoberberines and its activity is based on the content of isocholine alkaloid. Berberine has gained popularity thanks to its strength of activity, which is compared to the effectiveness of metformin.

How does it work?

Berberine mainly influences facilitating insulin balance, by means of effective utilization of glucose by our organism. Moreover, by a specific enzyme AMPK, which it effectively activates, it regulates the work of metabolism, improving the utilization of energy substrates. The effect supporting sensitivity of tissues to insulin makes supplementation act against insulin resistance. This function effectively supports the treatment of diabetes, prevents glycation reactions and secures intestines from the breakdown of sugar, taking care of their functions and health.

Supportive functions of glucose arouses many hopes in relation to the treatment of diabetes. In the scientific studies with the use of berberine, it was concluded that the amount of 1500 mg per day, applied in 3 portions 500 mg each during the day, demonstrated similar biological effects to the  activity of metformin (Metabolism, 2008; 57: 712–7).

The above activities effectively promote the fight with obesity, support the utilization of energy substrates, modify the pace of metabolism and fat oxidation. Moreover, these activities influence hormones responsible for the utilization of fats for energy needs, supporting their utilization during effort, which is related to the regulation of hormones responsible for their storage.

Biological activity of berberine effectively supports the organism in anti-bacterial, antidiarrheal and anticancer effects. Apart from the preventive effect against diabetes type II, it additionally supports decreasing cholesterol level and helps to decrease blood pressure. Some sources suggest that the supplementation also supports the fight with depression, which is related to the support of proper functions of intestinal bacterial flora.

Interestingly, the product has no side-effects. The only contraindication is neonatal jaundice or diseases of the intestinal system, which may give more intensive symptoms during supplementation.

Application in sports

Supplementation with berberine will work well in the periods of fat reduction, enabling the increase of tissue sensitivity to the activity of insulin. This means that its support during this period will contribute to more effective reduction of the so-called “love handles”, the occurrence of which is related to the activity of insulin. Additionally, berberine may have positive influence during the period of carbloadings, facilitating their utilization for the needs of complementing glycogen supplies, improving the effectiveness of sugar metabolism.

This effect may be successfully used during the periods of building dry muscle mass, as protection for the organism so that energy substrates consumed in the form of carbohydrates are utilized in the optimal way, which will ensure effective utilization of carbohydrates by tissues, minimizing the effect of storing adipose tissue.

The dose of 300-400mg is considered an amount, which demonstrates preventive effect. It means that this type of dose should effectively support glucose utilization.

The amount 1000mg demonstrated the effect supporting the decrease of cholesterol level and the change of the ratio of the concentration of lipoproteins HDL to LDL.

The dose of 1500 mg demonstrated strong effect decreasing the level of sugar in blood, this amount was usually divided into 3 portions during the day.

The application of berberine demonstrates strong effect supporting the functions of glucose-insulin balance in the organism. Its activity effectively decreases the level of glucose in blood, supporting the fight with insulin-resistance. Thanks to increasing sensitivity of tissues to insulin, it effectively supports the utilization of glucose for energy purposes. It may be successfully used during fat reduction or building dry muscle mass, as protection from storing fat.
