Eating disorders cause 

The causes of eating disorders should be considered individually in each case. It is increasingly said that the occurrence of these diseases is influenced by a contemporary, fast lifestyle. Not without significance are unrealistic images of bodies promoted in the media and social networks. 

The main causes of eating disorders are most often related to the disturbed family situation. For this reason, psychotherapy should always include not only sick people, but also entire families. 

It happens that a severe experience, high stress is a factor triggering the eating disorder, triggers a tendency. If improper functioning in the family is superimposed on it, the eating disorder may develop fully 

Eating disorders types 

The primary eating disorders include anorexia (anorexia nervosa) and bulimia (bulimia nervosa). Other diseases are so-called secondary disorders. In this group, new diseases are constantly increasing, which often result, among other things, from the life situation. 


A person with anorexia aims at a maximum reduction of body weight by reducing the amount of food intake. The consequences of anorexia are 

hormonal disorders, 

low muscle mass, 

the so-called. small heart syndrome. 

Anorexia mortality is even 18-20%. For this reason, the treatment of anorexia is often combined with a stay in a hospital. 


The most common symptom of bulimia is compulsive overeating and provoking vomiting to prevent weight gain. Vomiting is a remedy for excess calories. Such a measure does not have to be vomiting. A person can also use very intense, many hours of physical activity (so-called bulimia sports). 


A disorder that combines the symptoms of anorexia and bulimia. Periods of starvation are interwoven with wolf attacks, hunger, compulsive overeating and vomiting. 

Orthorexia nervosa 

Eating disorder that results from obsessing about healthy food. The sick person reduces his food more and more, because none of them is healthy enough. As a result, starvation occurs. 


A person suffering from bigorexia aims to have more and more muscle mass. This eating disorder is more often related to men who subordinate their entire body shape to life. As a consequence, excessive protein consumption, dehydration and illegal doping are common. 


Pregnorexia is also called gestational anorexia. A woman who suffers from pregnorexia starves herself while pregnant, thus trying to minimize the weight gain. It is also a way to quickly return to form after childbirth. The consequence of pregnorexia is often premature delivery and problems with breastfeeding. 


It is a eating disorder that connects with alcoholism. The person limits the amount of food intake, so that he can drink more alcohol without gaining weight.
