Undoubtedly, the amount of equipment that can be placed in a room / garage / basement will never match the equipment of professional fitness clubs. However, do you need so many different machines to achieve your dream figure? Is it worth investing in your own exercise equipment? To answer these questions you should analyze all pros and cons in owning your own gym.

A fully equipped, own gym is an unfulfilled dream of many people. Professional fitness equipment is not the cheapest. However, a one-off expense on a basic exercise set often speaks more than a monthly fee for a gym pass. Depending on the advancement of the person exercising, the expenditure on the basic equipment may differ significantly.


Pros of having your own – mini gym

Time to commute. You save time to commute and return from the gym. In larger cities, getting to the gym may involve a loss of time of several dozen minutes one way. At this time in the comfort of your home, you can finish your training!

Always free equipment. If you’ve ever gone to the gym, you know that it may take several minutes to wait for the machine to be released. In your own “exercise corner” you will not have this problem.

You do not waste time talking. You are the only weight and weight you are struggling with. For those who are strongly motivated to exercise, it will be a big plus that allows maximum focus on training. For those less determined it may turn out to be a minus – the training will be longer and more boring.


Disadvantages of training at home

Training without belaying = smaller weights. Lack of a belayer is a big downside. In case of failure – the belayer / training partner will help you with the last repetition. While training at home, you will have to pay attention to the load you want to put on the barbell, and the number of repetitions will have to be in your own safe maximum.

Few exercise equipment. With the basic equipment, you can do exercises for all muscle groups, but a small amount disturbs slightly during exercise. The biggest downside of home gyms is the small amount of dumbbells, and most often it is 1 – 2 pairs. What is involved – from the series to the series, you have to unscrew them and load them. In addition, the variety of training through exercises on different types of machines gives greater satisfaction with the exercises, and more isolates muscle groups.

The equipment is not the best. For many people this may not have any meaning, but the quality of the equipment on which it is practiced is quite important. Unstable benches can be a burden for heavier people, and home extracts often go very unfinished.

Training at home – less motivation to exercise. What can be a plus for one is a downside for others. Surprisingly, with the gym at your fingertips (in the room), it’s harder to get to training than if you go to the gym a few hundred meters away. If you’re already in the gym, you can only train. If there is a TV or computer next to the exercise equipment, it will distract you during training.

How much can you achieve by exercising at home?

Is it possible to achieve as much as training at home in a professional gym? The answer is simple – yes! Training in the comfort of your home does not have to be doomed to failure, on the contrary. It all depends on your commitment. If the workouts at home will be done at 100%, and the diet will be finished on the last button, the effects can be seen from the training to the training. Remember – everything is in your head. If you want to achieve something in this sport – you do not need a huge number of machines or 300 square meters of training space.


What is a better financial solution?

It all depends on what quality and how much equipment you want to have in your own gym. If you dream of professional equipment – it will be the expense of several – several thousand zlotys. If you want to do it at the lowest cost, you can try to create most of the devices yourself (bench, stands, lifts, prayer book, etc.) as well as – look for used equipment.

Many people say that own gym is saving money, but is it always like that? The costs incurred on your own exercise equipment are a one-time expense. However, as you progress, you will need more and more loads and, for example, more dumbbell pairs (drop sets – saving time for spinning and twisting the dumbbell), and it costs everything. Thus, the financial issue is a contentious issue, and determining the cost-effectiveness requires providing the demand for equipment and the period in which we intend to train.


If you decided to buy your own equipment, what should you pay attention to?

Basic equipment. If you have decided to purchase exercise equipment, you must obtain all the necessary elements that will enable you to conduct effective training. They will need it

Bench with adjustable backrest. Thanks to the backrest adjustment, the bench can be used as a basic element of home gym equipment. It will be used to exercise the chest, shoulders, back and triceps.

Stands for barbells. Often overlooked by young gym adepts, however, it is a necessary piece of equipment for any gym, even home.

Top lift + bottom lift. It is best to equip yourself with lifts with a guide. They are a bit more expensive than the links themselves, but much safer. If you have the option of placing two lifts at a distance of 3m from each other, they can serve as a gate, so you can perform an additional range of exercises,


Prayer book. Very useful, it insulates biceps.

Straight barbell, broken barbell, dumbbells. Essentials that are an inseparable element of any gym. It is worth to buy a dumbbell with the possibility of taking off / adding a load to get the required weight of the dumbbell. In addition, you will save a lot of space.
