Is red meat healthy?

– There is no controversy about the negative impact of meat on the cardiovascular system.It is a product that we should consume rarely, which is proven by the latest pyramid of healthy nutrition.Meat is a product rich mainly in complementary protein, containing a set of amino acids, which, however, can be obtained from plants.It is worth mentioning that it is difficult to obtain them only from one plant and you have to compose a diet in such a way as to supplement all necessary nutrients.It is worth remembering that meat is rich in saturated fat, whose consumption according to the guidelines of the European Cardiac Society should be reduced, and the meat of ruminants is also rich in particularly unfavorable trans fats.Meat consumption should be minimized or even completely eliminated – says dr hab.n. med. Daniel Śliż from the Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the Medical University of Warsaw.

– Products containing saturated fat disturb the lipid metabolism and, as a result, contribute to the development of atherosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes and shortening of life.Meat is not the basis of the nutrition pyramid, the basis of which is primarily vegetables, specific fats.It is necessary to convert animal products into vegetable ones in a diet – adds prof.Artur Mamcarz, Head of the 3rd Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology of the Medical University of Warsaw at the SOLEC Hospital in Warsaw.

Is red meat certainly harmful?

A slightly different opinion is prof.Andrzej Pająk – head of the Department of Epidemiology and Population Research at the Institute of Public Health at Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.In his opinion, the issue does not concern the question whether the vegetarian diet is better than the average diet, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.As the expert convinces, the problem is the answer to the question of whether there is sufficient evidence that the vegetarian diet is better than the diet, which recommends limiting the consumption of meat.

There are no clinical trials on the miraculous properties of a vegetarian diet, but as the specialists emphasize, a reasonably balanced vegetarian diet can provide the right level of protein in the body.

– One can not fail to notice that the various forms of vegetarian lifestyle have accompanied mankind for centuries and this is a strong argument to refrain from their unambiguous criticism.However, in the absence of evidence that a vegetarian diet has a stronger pro-health effect than a diet with a small amount of meat, which is recommended by scientific societies, the Polish cultural circle should rather take care to disseminate the proceeding according to these recommendations.The compromise is therefore a departure from a fairly widespread atherogenic diet (predisposing to the development of atherosclerosis) and limiting the consumption of meat – recommends prof.Spider.

Meat – better not fried and grilled

All three doctors agree that the problem of eating meat does not end with its choice, but also the way it is made.Specialists advise against frying and grilling, which have a negative impact on the level of our cholesterol, and also cause cancer.The best option is meat cooked by steaming or baked.

– If someone likes meat and can not eliminate it from the diet, remember that it should be processed as little as possible.Avoid frying, long grilling and it is worth replacing them with sea fish, which is a great source of protein and healthy fats.Often you can hear opinions that fish are incorrectly prepared, but do not let people be discouraged.It is better to eat fatty fish than red meat of terrestrial animals, and if you choose them, try to eat only lean meat that contains less fat.Unfortunately, regardless of the type of meat, each of them contains too much cholesterol – says prof.Mamcarz.
