Ginger contains a few extremely interesting substances, thanks to which it is such a wonderful and fascinating perennial – so it is worth using ginger. This Asian plant was already known in antiquity, and today returns not only as a spice, but also as a popular remedy for many ailments.
A wealth of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
In ginger both in powder and in rhizome one can find, among others, B vitamins (it contains especially a lot of vitamin B3, thanks to which ginger cares about the endocrine system and production of, for example, estrogen). In addition, ginger contains a lot of vitamin B6 (that’s why this root should reach people with insulin resistance – vitamin B6 helps in the metabolism of complex carbohydrates). In the ginger you can also find a lot of minerals, including iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, selenium and manganese. Both in the root and in the powdered ginger we find a lot of antioxidants – therefore, in the ORAC scale (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity – measures of antioxidant capacity determined for food products characterized by antioxidant content), ginger is high. Regular consumption of ginger strengthens immunity, anti-cancer (breast, prostate and intestinal cancer) and improves well-being.
Ginger for colds
Why is ginger so often recommended for colds? This is because its action can be compared to aspirin. Ginger reduces the clumping of platelets, analgesic and anti-inflammatory. In addition, it has an antibacterial effect, and all this thanks to the oils contained in the plant.
It is worth knowing that in ginger we can also find gingerol (phenolic compound) – it is found only in fresh, unprocessed ginger. If you look closely at its structure, it closely resembles capsaicin, thanks to which the plant has a warming effect. This can also be useful for colds – nothing warms up like tea with grated ginger. Capsaicin is a chemical compound that occurs inter alia in chili pepper and responsible for the characteristic, spicy taste.
A way to overeat and nausea?
In the ginger, in addition to gingerol, we also find the second active compound – zingibain, which works like capsaicin – it warms up and speeds up digestion. The consumption of ginger increases the secretion of gastric juices, so it is worth adding it to severely digestible foods to avoid discomfort from overeating. Interestingly, ginger can also help with nausea accompanying pregnant women. Sucking a slice of ginger can effectively reduce morning sickness. It is also worth using after narcosis and chemotherapy. Interestingly, ginger is also a frequent component of drugs for motion sickness. In addition, the oral use of ginger promotes the care of the oral cavity. Ginger reduces the unpleasant odor and reduces the risk of bacterial and viral infections.
Faster fat burning
Ginger can also be a good weight loss dietary supplement. Ginger supports the process of thermogenesis, thanks to which the body temperature increases and the body uses more energy and calories, which affects the loss of weight. Among people who are slimming down, the so-called ginger water, which drinking helps in slimming. Ginger water is very easy to prepare at home. The recipe is so – ginger root cut into thin slices and pour 2 liters of water. Cook for about 20 minutes. At the end of cooking, add one large clove of garlic and bring the brew to a boil. Then strain the whole and leave to cool. Every day, you need to drink about a liter (but not once) of prepared water. Add 1-2 slices of lemon or lime to each cup of water.
A good idea to start the day is to eat water with lemon and ginger. Such water with additives will quickly put us on our feet, provide a lot of energy and cleanse the body at the same time.
How to use ginger?
Recommended water with ginger is not the only way to regularly eat this plant. It is worth to prepare candied ginger and reach for it with sore throats. Although it is not worth overdoing with it, because ginger is candied in sugar, but remember that even sugar tablets are added to the throat. A small piece of candy ginger certainly will not hurt, but it will disinfect the mouth and warm the body from the inside. It can also be added to dishes with pods to avoid gases and flatulence. Several sliced slices are also worth adding to fried dishes. It is always better to use fresh ginger (it contains much more biologically active compounds) than powdered – the latter does not have so many valuable properties. Fresh ginger is also more aromatic than powdered. Powder ginger will work better as a culinary supplement due to its consistency. Either way, it’s worth using both forms for health!
