I have been familiar with the World Health Organization (WHO) statistics for years dealing with dietetics. They remind you that obesity has reached the size of a pandemic, and diseases that are its complications are one of the main causes of mortality in the world! In the US, for example, mortality caused by excessive body mass causes as many as ⅕ of all deaths. However, in my opinion the most important issue is the cascade increase in the number of people suffering from obesity.

According to the WHO, statistically over the past 40 years, the number of overweight people increased from 330 million to 462 million. However, people with obesity from 105 million to 641 million! 

For most of the human population, food was a scarce commodity. For hundreds of years, humanity has scarcely eaten. Now the situation has changed by 180 degrees. It is no longer a problem to feed yourself for the equivalent of 5 euros (24 zlotys) per day. This is the rate per hour of average paid work. Comparing it to our ancestors who had to work hard all day to earn food – the difference is colossal. 

However, obesity has accompanied mankind since prehistoric times. The first archaeological finds show silhouettes of people with more body mass. An example is a Venus figurine from Willendorf. Over the following centuries people with obesity were differently perceived. In the Middle Ages, obesity was considered a sign of well-being and high social status. In Baroque, however, people with obesity were adored, appearing in the paintings of many eminent painters, including Rubens. 

However, over time, people began to notice that excessive body mass is not only a sign of wealth, but a serious burden on the body. The words of the ancient thinker Hippocrates were unearthed. At the turn of 460-375 BC, he stated that “sudden death is more common among those who are naturally more obese than those who are slim. But only in 1650. Tobias Vanner used the term “obesity what Latin” (obesus) meant “the one who became plump by eating. 

However, the greatest progress in understanding the causes and consequences of obesity has taken place in the last 20 years, since the obesity was recognized as a disease and entered by the WHO into the International List of Diseases and Health Problems. And thanks to m.in. identifying biologically active compounds produced by adipose tissue. An important endocrine organ (affecting the entire organism), which is the adipose tissue, can contribute to the development of many diseases, especially to so-called civilization diseases. 

Contemporary obesity is a complex chronic disease. It is caused by many environmental, metabolic, psychological and hormonal factors, including disruption of hunger and satiety hormones. Contemporary obesity leads to about 50 serious, other dangerous diseases, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cancer, heart disease, osteoarthritis. And most importantly, obesity alone, without proper treatment will not subside. 

Contemporary obesity is no longer a symbol of a good birth, a full bowl and good nutrition. Obesity is harvesting both in the rich Arab countries and the poor, African so-far associated with hunger. And people with obesity, though thick, often go to doctors in a state of extreme malnutrition with minimal amounts of nutrients in the body. 

Imagine we’re not talking about you here. Many people, even if their BMI (body mass index) indicates something else, it may seem that overweight or obesity do not concern them. I am reminded of the story of a bus driver who claimed that there was no problem until he was not getting into trouble with the steering wheel because of his carcass! 

I will use the example of a person with anorexia. Anorexia, like obesity, is a disease with high mortality. People with anorexia do not feel a little sick! This is the biggest problem. Despite the extremely low BMI, health problems, lack of energy, these people still feel fat and unattractive. What many people do not know is the fact that you are already living with obesity and anorexia for the rest of your life. Thanks to appropriate treatment and intervention of specialists – dietitians and psychologists – it is possible, however, to persuade these people to change their eating habits. Targeting a new path, showing methods and appropriate tools. Nevertheless, the old path stays in your head for the rest of your life. It may lightly overgrow with grass, however, the Anorectic idea will start to lose weight again and again. A person with obesity at the moment of inattention can also leave the mental throat and lose control over the amount and quality of food consumed. 

If you are reading this article you are probably on the right track. However, many people with obesity are not aware of their illness and the risks associated with it. To answer the question whether it also applies to you, simply use the BMI formula. A score of 25 to 29 means you are overweight. It’s so-called pre-blame state. It is a sign that you are already developing obesity for some reason. The result above 30 means obesity. It is a disease entity. You may not feel it applies to you. I am not suffering from obesity, I only have a problem with unnecessary kilograms is a very common feature in this case.

1. Pre-contemplation, i.e. no intention to take action in the near future. You think 

2. Contemplation, or perception of obesity, considering the advantages and disadvantages of change.

3. Preparing for change, i.e. noticing that the list of benefits from the treatment of overweight and obesity is longer than the list of benefits of malnutrition 

4. Action, or taking specific steps to reduce body weight. 

5. Maintenance and consolidation of new behavior patterns. 

6. Recurrence – a natural element of change.
